Second/Third Officer

We are on the lookout for an experienced and qualified Deck Officer in the seagoing position of Third or Second Officer (Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch).

What is the role?

Our second and third officers are in charge of the navigational watch whilst the vessel is at sea. When navigating in pilotage waters you will act as co-navigators and support the master with the pilotage. A large part of the route is in pilotage waters and you are expected to seamlessly integrate into the bridge teams and positively contribute to bridge operations performed to best possible standard. 

You will be in charge of cargo watches during port turnarounds. Since the vessels are operating on tight schedules, our second and third mates ensure that cargo operations are carried out safely and efficiently. 

Our officers also supervise and carry out testing, inspection and maintenance of the vessel's fire fighting, life saving and emergency equipment.

What are we looking for?

To be successful in this role you be a true team player with a positive can-do attitude, you'll always be ready to roll up your sleeves and pitch in. You'll be cool and calm under pressure and be able to communicate with our passengers during an emergency. 

Additionally, you will:

  • hold a current STCW II/1 WatchKeeper Deck certificate of competency issued in New Zealand or issued by a state which is eligible for a NZ certificate of recognition
  • preferably have passenger and/or ro-pax vessel experience
  • have proven track record of positively contributing to safety culture
  • have proven experience working with Vessel Maintenance Systems
  • have proven track record of integrating into bridge teams and apply BRM to best possible standards
  • have excellent verbal and written communication skills
