What is the role?
Our Mate/Master has the conduct of the vessel when the Master is off watch and requires candidates to conduct pilotages and berth the vessel in a variety of weather conditions. You will be in charge of deck maintenance, surveys, ordering deck stores and holds key responsibilities under the Safety Management System.
The successful applicant will be required to undertake extensive training over a period of several months to allow the satisfactorily completion of the companies Mate/Master structured training programme, which encompasses the demonstration of competence in ship handling, navigation of the operating routes and completion of the Pilotage Exemption Certification for both Wellington and the Marlborough Sounds.

What are we looking for? To be successful in this role you will be a proven leader with a positive can-do attitude. You'll be cool and calm under pressure and be able to lead our crew during an emergency and communicate effectively with our passengers.
Additionally, you will:
- Hold a current STCW II/2 Unlimited Masters certificate of competency issued in New Zealand or issued by a state which is eligible for a NZ certificate of recognition
- have proven ship handling experience
- preferably have passenger and/or ro-pax vessel experience
- preferably hold - or have held - Pilotage Exemption Certificates
- have proven experience working with - and contributing to - Safety & Quality Management Systems
- have proven track record of positively contribute to safety culture
- have proven experience working with Vessel Maintenance Systems
- have excellent verbal and written communication skills
